A story of science, love, and sandpipers. Yes, sandpipers.
What began as a dream between Tom and Beverly Porter became Porter Family Vineyards — a deeply personal estate where curiosity, passion, and a profound respect for the land shaped everything that followed.
When we purchased this property in the celebrated Coombsville region of Napa Valley, we saw more than vineyard land. We saw potential, beauty, and a place worth understanding. With Tom’s scientific mind and our shared love of nature, we spent years studying the hillsides, observing the seasons, and learning how to farm in harmony with the site.
To preserve the natural landscape, we built a 17,000-square-foot underground winery tucked into the hillside. During construction, we uncovered something extraordinary: fossilized sandpiper footprints embedded in the earth, dating back millions of years. In that moment, our connection to this land deepened. We realized we were not simply owners of this property — we were caretakers of a much older story.
Those ancient footprints now appear on every bottle of Porter Family Vineyards wine, a symbol of time, place, and our enduring bond with this remarkable estate.
Today, we welcome guests one group at a time for private tastings inside our underground cave. Each visit reflects the same thoughtfulness, warmth, and craftsmanship that built this winery from the ground up. More than a tasting, it is an intimate experience rooted in family, history, and the timeless spirit of the land.
