Joel Weiss

Joel Weiss earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering at Boston University and his Masters and Ph. D. in Materials Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York where he discovered his passion for wine.

“My love of wine started in the 1970s when I first discovered Rhone Valley wines through a wonderful wine shop owner during graduate studies in NY State” says Joel. “It was one of the great revelations of my life.”

He began to fall for California wines when he moved here in 1974—a remarkable vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. While tending that love for wine, Joel Weiss held engineering and senior management positions at both start-ups and Fortune 500 companies during his over 30 years of high-tech experience. He was the president of a computer disk drive industry trade association before joining Porter Family Vineyards.

During that time period, Joel admits that his interest in wine grew from a hobby to an obsession, leading to a world-class cellar of wines from around the world.

Joel’s role at Porter Family Vineyards as the director of marketing allows him to use the expertise he developed over his career in the world of business to explore the world of his true love, wine.

“I am excited to be working with one of my great passions in my life – wine,” says Joel. “I love working with the Porter family—we all share such enthusiasm for great wine and the infinite attention to detail that creates it. Tom Porter and I have worked together for many years and we share a common vision and goal for Porter Family Vineyards. We want people to fall in love with these wines.”
